Only the age difference between Muriel, the elder, and Delphine, the younger, could tell them apart. As for the rest, from discovering films during their childhood thanks to a grandfather in love with cinema, up to their short films, they almost did everything together. Not an intense relation though. Rather the obvious fact and the desire to work together, extending their common views on the world, cinema, literature or music. To combine distinct sensitivities, two strong tempers, each in its own way: the author of various novels, Delphine, and her fondness for fiction, the director of various documentaries, Muriel, and her inclination for reality, behind the same camera. When Muriel leaves the family home for Louis Lumière (school) and later on to assist Louis Malle or Aki Kaurismäki, Delphine always takes advantage of the summer to meet her on the set, working as a trainee or a volunteer. This is how they “started to consider cinema as a duet. Our love of cinema is quite identical, there is, to the best of our knowledge, no film or director that one would like and the other wouldn’t”.
Making movies together was born from a desire but also by accident. During the strike in 1995, they decided to make the most of “this outstanding set and thousands of quote-unquote improvised extras, because it was all written, a fiction inside this documentary mould”. Il faut imaginer Sisyphe heureux, their first self produced film, selected in numerous festivals and a prize winner in Los Angeles, marks the beginning of their very synergetic cooperation.
